We pour front walks, side yard paths to the trash cans, walks out to the street, steps up to the porch and landings at the back door. When a sidewalk panel heaves up at a tree root or sinks at a corner, someone eventually catches a toe on it. Call (817) 207-5579 and we will look at it and tell you whether it needs one panel or the whole run.
Walks on your lot and walks the city owns
The walk from your driveway to the front door is yours to build the way you like. The sidewalk along the street usually sits in the city parkway. In Fort Worth, work there takes a parkway permit and has to meet the city standard:
- At least 4 inches thick
- Cross slope no steeper than 2 percent, so a wheelchair does not tip
- Joints at least every 40 feet on a 4 foot walk and every 50 feet on a 5 foot walk, with tooled joints spaced to match the width
- Width and setback lined up with the existing sidewalks on the block
New subdivisions in Fort Worth get a 5 foot sidewalk on every lot. In older neighborhoods, a replacement panel has to line up with the ones on either side of it.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| New front walk, broom finish, per sq ft | $6 to $10 |
| Remove and replace a walk panel, per sq ft | $7 to $14 |
| Stamped or exposed aggregate walk, per sq ft | $9 to $20 |
| Small walk or single panel job | About $1,500 minimum |
| Concrete steps | Priced by the number of risers |
Typical ranges, not quotes. A city sidewalk under a parkway permit is priced after we see the block.
Concrete steps
Steps should feel the same on every rise. We form them so each riser is the same height and each tread is deep enough for a full foot, with a slight pitch so rain runs off instead of puddling. Where steps meet a porch or a stoop, we pin them to the existing concrete so they do not pull away. If the old steps have sunk away from the house, the leveling page covers lift versus replace.
Older homes in Fairmount and Arlington Heights often have original walks and steps from the early 1900s. Fairmount is a historic district, so changes to what faces the street can need a review first. We ask about that up front.
Call and we will come check the walk and price the fix.
Fixing trip hazards
A panel that has lifted an inch at a joint is a fall waiting to happen. Grinding the lip down works when the panel is otherwise sound. When a root has cracked the panel or the lift keeps getting worse, we cut out the panel, deal with the root if the owner of the tree agrees, and pour a new section doweled into the panels on either side.
Questions about Sidewalks & Steps in Fort Worth
- Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my house?
- Ask your city before you pay for it. The rules on who fixes the walk along the street differ from one city to the next. We can pull the permit and do the work either way.
- Can you match my old sidewalk?
- We match the width, the joint spacing and the broom direction. New concrete starts out lighter than old concrete and darkens over a year or two.
- Can you add a handrail to the steps?
- We can set sleeves in the steps during the pour so a rail can be bolted in later. Tell us at the estimate where you want it.
